Abingdon High offers multiple technology and computer information classes in an effort to teach the bright, young minds of tomorrow the information and concepts of fast moving technologies entering our world daily. Abingdon High has multiple resource centers throughout the school which allow students to work on class projects or individual research much like the students in the picture to the right.

 

Accounting I and II

In accounting, students study the basic principles, concepts, and practices of the accounting cycle by using a manual system in Accounting I and the automated system in Accounting II.  In this course, students will complete the steps of the accounting cycle, implement accounts for special procedures which include depreciation of plant assets; uncollectible accounts receivable; record inventories; calculate and record notes payable and notes receivable, and prepare other costs of doing business. Recording payroll and banking procedures will be implemented. Students will implement accounts for special procedures and will be able to identify characteristics of professional conduct as well as confidentiality concepts and policies.

 

Advanced Computer Information Systems

Advanced Computer Information Systems uses Microsoft Office 2007 to prepare students for careers in the business and administration services industry and the information technology services industry. Students apply problem-solving skills to real-life situations through advanced integrated software applications. Completion of this course may prepare students for the certification exam for Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOS). This class is a dual-enrolled class which offers students 3 hours college credit through Virginia Highlands Community College and 1 high school credit.

 

Business Law

Business Law is an in-depth look and exploration of the world of Law in the United States. Students will be covering the history of laws, legal systems, courts, our constitutional rights, cyber-law, contracts, consideration, offers and acceptances. Students will, via online resources, learn of the law of Sales, Property Law, Agency and Employment Law, Business Organization and Borrowing Money and Paying Bills. Students should be computer literate and prepared to use technological resources.

 

Business and Personal Finance

Business and Personal Finance Class will teach the student all about how to keep track of personal and business Finance. The first instruction will be how to keep and manage checkbook, dept and credit card both on file and online. In the spring, we will be exploring the world of Stocks and will participate in the statewide Stock-market Game online. By this time students will be fully capable of putting their tuition to the test and will be a good practice to what students will be dealing with in the future.

 

 

Computer Information Systems

Students apply problem-solving skills to real-life situations through word processing, spreadsheet, database, and multimedia presentation software, and though integrated software activities. Students work individually and in groups to explore computer concepts, operating systems, networks and telecommunications, and emerging technologies. Completion of this course may prepare students for the certification exam for Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOS).

 

 

Computer Programming

This class begins with teaching students the history of computers, the binary number system, and how to write programs using BASIC. The students are taught how to take a task and break it down into logical steps to solve the problem. They use several different methods of programming logic throughout the course.

In this course, we will be using the Alice program to explore how to make objects move animatedly. We will be using a gaming program to write and create animated games for use by everyone. We will also explore the world of robotics using the Lego Robotics. We will build robots and program them to complete tasks, follow a line using the light sensor to guide the robot, program it to "talk", etc. Apon completion of this course the student will take a final exam to comprehend the amount of programming and information he or she has learned.

 

Design, Multimedia, and Web Technologies

Students develop proficiency in using desktop publishing software to create a variety of printed and electronic publications. Students will incorporate journalistic principles in design and layout of publications. Students will work with sophisticated hardware and software to develop websites and multimedia presentations including various video productions. Some of the software that students will use is Adobe Premiere Pro for Video Editing, Dream-weaver 8 for Web Page development, and Adobe CS for design editing.

 

Information Technology 

Information Technology is a basic computer class that is designed to teach students the fundamentals that are necessary for their success in the technology world. This course is divided into three basic parts (hence the name IC3): 1)Computing Fundamentals, 2) Key Applications, 3)Living Online.
As students complete each section, they will be taking an industry certification test. Once all three parts have been passed, the student will receive an IC3 industry certification and two verified credits toward graduation.

 

Marketing

Students gain an understanding of the importance of marketing in today’s society. They develop skills related to interpersonal communication, self-presentation, economics, marketing sales, employability, career discovery, and ethical decision-making. This course reinforces mathematics, science, English, and history/social science Standards of Learning (SOL). Computer/technology applications and DECA activities support this course. DECA, the co-curricular student organization, offers opportunities in leadership, community, and competitive events.
